LEGACY LICENSE PLATE PROGRAM
Classic car owners lives just became a little bit easier thanks to assembly member Mike Gatto
D-Los Angeles. AB-1658 written by Gatto and signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown
established the California Legacy License Plate Program. This new program allows car owners to
apply through the DMV for the classic black plates with yellow lettering. These classic plates were
issued from 1963 to 1969 when they were replaced by the blue plate with yellow letters and
finally several versions of the white plate with blue letters that we have today.
Mike Gatto's hobby is restoring classic cars so he knows first hand that small details like original
black plates on a1969 Camaro gives it the iconic American Muscle Car look that can't be
reproduced with new white plates. You can apply for these plates through the DMV, they are $50
for the initial purchase and $40 per year to renew them. Personalized black plates can also be
purchased for an additional fee.
Some of you may think this is a great alternative but they still aren't the original vintage plates.
No, they aren't, but they are being made in the original presses by inmates at Folsom State Prison.
The only difference is the new black plates are painted with a clear reflective coating so they are
visible at night. These plates aren't just for classics, they are available for any year car, truck or
motorcycle. These are also a great solution for those of you who are tired of getting pulled over
for not running a front plate. I agree that a front plate detracts from the look of some cars, these
new black plates should blend in much better with the front bumper and keep you out of trouble.
It isn't very often that a bill is passed in Sacramento that benefits the car hobby, so add that
final touch to your classic or be the first of your friends to put the black plate on you new
Silverado. Don't forget to send Assembly Member Mike Gatto a picture and say thanks for his
contribution to our great hobby.
