By Paul Hinkle Feed the Bug VW Show On October 5th the Deutschlander VW Club held their 5th annual Feed the Bug VW Show and Shine/Auto Swap Meet. This VW club has grown to 58 members from it’s original 3 and is now the fastest growing VW club in California. This club was formed 8 years ago when 3 VW owners decided to form a club for like-minded VW owners. Their motto is to maintain the VW lifestyle and the love of the VW for generations to come. Their membership ranges in age from 6 years to 88. The club is very family oriented; they get together at least 3 times a month. Activities include celebrating birthday’s and anniversaries to weekend camping or just cruising around the valley. The club wanted to do something for the community so they partnered with the Poverello House and started collecting food and money. The first event held by their club was a two-day event sponsored by American Ambulance. It rained both days and there were only 3 cars but they managed to collect $900 and so much food they couldn’t put all of it in a VW. They called American Ambulance and told them of the problem, within minutes an ambulance showed up and they loaded all the food and delivered it along with the $900 to the Poverello House. The car show that was held on Oct. 5th was the largest show they have held. There were car from all over California including the San Francisco and San Diego areas. There were also VW’s from Reno and 2 cars from Mexico. They had 22 vendors and 17 swappers. It is the largest VW event in Fresno County and the 2nd largest event in the San Joaquin Valley. By the end of the day they had 1,900 lbs. of food and $1,513 donated for the Poverello House. Paul Yocum, club President and all of their members would like to thank American Ambulance who has been the main sponsor since their first event, Wal-Mart and everyone that participated and helped make this event a success. Steve Bonesteel known for his stained glass art works and restoration of racecars will be greatly missed and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
